18-yr-old dies at Udaipur PHC; negligence alleged
Udaipur, May 5 -- Tension erupted in Udaipur district after an 18-year-old girl died at Mandwa primary health centre (PHC) allegedly due to a nurse's injection without a doctor's supervision, prompting her family and villagers to protest for compensation and a government job, police said.
The protest continued outside Kotda community health centre (CHC) on Saturday where a large crowd gathered and initially refused to allow the post-mortem without assurances. After officials held talks with the family for nearly eight hours, the district authorities agreed to conduct the postmortem by a medical board, register a case against the nursing staff, and provide financial compensation of Rs.5 lakh to the victim's family.
Meanwhile, on Monday, healthcare workers officers and staff at Kotda block submitted a memorandum to BMO Dr Shankarlal Chavhan, demanding security arrangements, stating such events create an unsafe working environment for them. As a mark of protest, they boycotted work, leaving no patients attended at health centres across the block on Monday.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Friday afternoon, when the victim, Aarti Kumari, was complaining of cough and cold and was taken to Mandwa PHC. A general nursing and midwifery (GNM) staff member allegedly administered an injection without a doctor's presence or any examination and Kumari died within minutes.
The death sparked outrage among villagers: On Saturday morning around 10am, family members and locals staged a sit-in outside Kotda CHC, where the body was kept in the mortuary. They demanded compensation and a government job for a family member.
Officials, including the tehsildar, block medical officer (BMO) and senior police officers, arrived and held multiple rounds of talks. After nearly eight hours of negotiations, an agreement was reached.
DSP Dungar Singh said, "Counselling with the family was ongoing as per rules. Accepting their demands, it has been agreed to conduct the postmortem by a medical board, register a case against the nursing staff, and provide financial compensation of Rs.5 lakh. Following the agreement, the postmortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the family. The matter is currently under investigation."
The officer also said the victim's family submitted a complaint accusing the doctor and nursing staff of negligence. "The CMHO launched a probe in the matter. We are waiting for their report and also the autopsy report. Then, we will lodge a formal FIR," said Singh.
Kumari's father alleged serious negligence by the GNM staff member. He said no prescription was prepared and no medical examination was conducted before the injection.
"The injection was given directly without any check-up, which proved fatal for my daughter," he said.
Villagers also levelled serious allegations against the doctor posted at Mandwa PHC. They claimed Dr Subhash Chandra, officially assigned there, was attending duty at Kotda CHC instead. The father said that had the doctor been present, such negligence might not have occurred and his daughter's life could have been saved.
Kumari was pursuing a diploma in elementary education and aspiring to become a teacher to support her family, which had been facing financial hardships, her family said....
