16-day strike against sand mining ends in beawar district
Beawar, July 4 -- A 16-day strike against alleged sand mining in the Khari River at Jaliya-II village in Rajasthan's Beawar district ended on Friday after the district administration assured villagers that action would be taken and constituted a committee to investigate the allegations.
The indefinite hunger strike, which began on June 26, was called off after talks with the administration. Villagers who had climbed a water tank on Thursday evening also came down following the intervention.
The protesters had been on an indefinite fast for 16 days and staging a sit-in for the past two days. They had submitted a memorandum to the additional divisional commissioner, Ajmer, seeking cancellation of the allotment of Plots No. 7 and 10 and demanding that the land be declared a green zone.
The villagers argued that Jaliya-II is an agriculture- and livestock-dependent village, making the preservation of green spaces essential. A meeting between the administration and the villagers on Friday led to a breakthrough. The discussions were attended by Masuda deputy Shivraj Singh, sub-divisional magistrate Deepshikha, mining department officer Anita Mirchandani, village representatives and former MLA Rakesh Parik.
Masuda SDM Deepshikha said the villagers' primary demand was action against alleged illegal sand mining in the Khari River. A committee headed by mining engineer Jagdish has been constituted to investigate the matter, with seven members from Jaliya village included in the team....
