Jaipur, Aug. 6 -- Student leader Shubham Rewad, who had been on a 15-day hunger strike demanding the restoration of student union elections in Rajasthan and the establishment of a separate Rajasthani language department at Rajasthan University, ended his fast on Wednesday after receiving assurances from the administration. Rajasthan Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasara, Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Jully, party MLA Mukesh Bhakar and other senior party leaders visited Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital, where Rewad had been admitted, and persuaded him to end his fast by offering him juice. After ending the hunger strike, Rewad said the agitation will continue until both demands are met. Earlier in the day, Jaipur collector Sandesh Nayak met Rewad at the hospital. According to Rewad, the collector assured him that the demand for establishing a Rajasthani language department at Rajasthan University would be taken up at the earliest. Rewad claimed Nayak assured him of holding high-level discussions with the government on the demand for student union polls and working towards a positive decision. Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot had also visited Rewad at SMS Hospital on Wednesday. Rewad had refused both water and medical treatment for the previous 48 hours. During the visit, Gehlot persuaded him to resume drinking water by offering him a glass of water and appealed to him to call off the hunger strike. Later, Gehlot criticised the BJP government, describing its approach towards the youth as "completely unjustified" and "insensitive." He urged it to address the students' demands and find a resolution. Rewad began his sit-in protest outside the Rajasthan University gate. On July 30, police detained him and shifted him to the Intensive Care Unit at SMS Hospital, where he continued his hunger strike until Wednesday evening. Earlier, CJP spokesperson Ashutosh Ranka visited Rewad during his protest outside the university and backed his demands. Meanwhile, police detained five student leaders protesting at Rajasthan University on Wednesday, saying the action was taken to prevent traffic disruption as the demonstrators marched towards the university's main gate. Rajasthan BJP chief spokesperson Ramlal Sharma accused the party of political opportunism. He said Congress leaders had "left no stone unturned in undermining the interests of the youth" while they were in power, but were now portraying themselves as the youth's biggest well-wishers after moving into the opposition. He maintained that the BJP government was committed to protecting students' interests while balancing academic activities and other administrative considerations related to student union elections....
