Jaipur, March 10 -- Congress MLA Shikha Meel Barala on Monday decried what she claimed was a surge in land mafia activities and illegal colonies in Chomu, branding the situation a "Ravan Raj", during an adjournment motion in the Rajasthan Assembly. Raising the matter under Adjournment Motion (Rule 50), Barala said despite the recent expansion of the Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) jurisdiction from around 3,000 sq km to nearly 6,000 sq km, common residents continue to be deprived of basic civic amenities while unauthorised colonies mushroom. "Agricultural land is being illegally converted into residential plots and sold without land-use conversion approvals, sanctioned master plans or mandatory permissions," she alleged. According to the MLA, illegal colonies are coming up across areas along Sikar Road, Veer Hanuman Ji Road, and in villages such as Samod and Morija in the Chomu belt. Barala claimed that buyers are being misled with assurances that these colonies will eventually be regularised. "People invest their life savings in such plots, but later struggle for basic facilities like electricity and water," she said. The MLA also flagged alleged encroachments around Rani Bandh and its water flow area, demanding that the government conduct on-ground demarcation through officials to assess the actual situation. Alleging a nexus between land mafias and political patronage in the region, Barala claimed that construction activities are taking place even on land earmarked in the master plan for public utilities such as a bus stand and sector roads. She demanded immediate identification of illegal colonies and encroachments and strict action against those responsible. "Campaigns are launched for a few days, and then everything returns to normal. The common people neither get development benefits nor protection of their rights," she said. Barala further alleged that a BJP leader is linked to land mafia activities in Chomu, intensifying the political confrontation over urban development and regulation in the region....
