'IAF staffer got Rs.10k monthly for spying'
Jaipur, March 26 -- An Indian Air Force staffer, who was arrested by the Rajasthan police from Assam on Sunday was paid Rs.10,000 monthly for allegedly spying and sharing sensitive information with Pakistan-based handlers, police said.
A senior official in the intelligence unit, said, "During an interrogation, the accused, Sumit Kumar, confessed that he was receiving Rs.10,000 per month in exchange for sharing sensitive information related to the Indian Air Force with Pakistani handlers. We have also sent a team along with Sumit to Assam on Tuesday to interrogate him at the Chabua air base from where he used to pass on information. Two to three more people are also under our radar now."
According to the officials, he went to attend a religious gathering in Guwahati in 2023 when he came in touch with some Pakistani handlers. "He met a suspicious individual in that programme who called the Pakistani agents and made him having a conversation. The handlers later lured him with money in exchange of which he started making stronger network and passing on sensitive information," he said.
The officer said that he was being paid Rs.5,000 initially for the first two years but later they gave him a raise after considering his .
"The payments were part of a fixed monthly arrangement in return for classified details, including information on fighter aircraft and airbase activities. Overall, he received around Rs.3.5 lakh in the last few years," he said.
Additional director general of police (Intelligence) Prafull Kumar said, "The accused was arrested in a joint operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence. Investigation began with the arrest of a suspect from Jaisalmer in January 2026, which led to the identification of Sumit Kumar (36), a resident of Uttar Pradesh, currently posted as a multi-tasking staff (MTS) at the Air Force Station in Chabua, Dibrugarh.During the interrogation with another spy-accused who was arrested earlier, his name cropepd in and we arrested him on Sunday. He was sent for a 10-day remand on Monday by the court till April 2."
The accused is suspected of having collected and passed on sensitive details related to Air Force installations, including locations of fighter aircraft, missile systems and personnel-related information from Chhabua and also Bikaner's Nala air force station, through social media platforms.
A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act, 1923 and relevant provisions of the BNS, and further investigation is underway, police said....
