Jaipur, Sept. 22 -- Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Monday accused the BJP-led state government of crossing "all limits of dishonesty and shamelessness" during the ongoing municipal board elections, accusing it of using the official machinery, police and administration to influence elected councillors. In a post on X, Gehlot alleged that the BJP government had "torn apart all norms and laws" to secure control of urban local bodies and claimed that the use of money and power had been aimed at overturning the popular mandate. Gehlot alleged that bids of up to Rs.2 crore were made for individual councillors and claimed that Congress councillors were subjected to notices and police action, including notices alleging illegal construction at their homes, sealing of business establishments and registration of new cases. He further alleged that police were sent to camps where councillors were staying as part of the parties' efforts to secure their support, and claimed that some councillors were forcibly taken away. "Perhaps there is hardly any municipal body where the BJP has not attempted to crush the public mandate through the use of power and money," Gehlot claimed, alleging that the developments had forced the Rajasthan high court to hear election-related petitions late into Saturday night. Meanwhile, state Congress chief Govind Singh Dotasra also made similar accusations against the BJP government. He alleged that Congress leaders, councillors and independents faced police action and pressure, and claimed senior leaders, including Leader of Opposition Tikaram Jully, MLAs and former MLAs, were subjected to coercive action and misbehaviour by police. Jully, in a social media post, alleged that BJP workers were being provided police protection while Congress workers faced lathi-charges, detention and arrests. Referring to Sultanpur in Kota, he alleged that Congress workers were lathi-charged and MLA Chetan Patel, along with other workers, was detained. "Is this what elections are?" Jully asked, alleging that democratic norms were being undermined through the use of state power.
