Mussoorie, Sept. 4 -- Heavy to moderate rain lashed several parts of Uttarakhand over the past 24 hours, triggering landslides, debris falls and slope collapses that disrupted traffic on more than 100 roads across the state, officials said on Thursday. The Meteorological Centre, Dehradun, has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall at isolated places in different districts between September 4 and 7. According to the daily district-wise rainfall summary, Uttarakhand received 16 mm of rainfall against a normal of 9.6 mm in the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Thursday, recording 66% excess rainfall. Udham Singh Nagar recorded the highest district rainfall at 38.5 mm against a normal of 6.8 mm, an excess of 465%. Nainital received 35.7 mm against its normal of 10.9 mm, while Champawat recorded 18.4 mm and Almora 12.9 mm. Incessant rain triggered landslides and debris falls on highways, state highways and rural roads across both the Garhwal and Kumaon divisions. Road-clearing teams from the Border Roads Organisation, Public Works Department and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana were deployed with heavy machinery, and around 55 blocked roads were reopened during the day, while efforts were underway to clear 83 blocked roads. In Uttarkashi, a landslide near the Gyansu open tunnel disrupted traffic on the Gangotri National Highway early on Thursday after boulders and debris fell onto the road. Heavy vehicles were restricted on the Captain Bridge-Bhukki stretch as a precaution. Authorities deployed JCB machines and cleared the debris within about an hour, restoring traffic. In Nainital, the Khutani-Bhawali-Tamli State Highway was partially restored to single-lane traffic after a landslide. Road-clearing teams also reopened several stretches on the Kathgodam-Hairakhan, Nainital-Kaladhungi-Bajpur, Garjiya-Betalghat-Mukteshwar and Ramnagar-Betalghat-Billekh routes. Several roads remained blocked in Almora, Pithoragarh, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal and Dehradun due to fresh landslides and debris accumulation. In Dehradun, five roads remained closed till Thursday evening, though the Badwala-Juddo to Matogi motor road was reopened at two locations. The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall in Nainital, Champawat, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Bageshwar on September 4. Heavy showers are also likely at isolated places in Dehradun, Haridwar, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Bageshwar and Udham Singh Nagar on September 5 and 6.
