Prime accused held for stepbrother's murder
Dehradun, June 6 -- The alleged mastermind wanted for the murder of his businessman stepbrother in Rajpur area last year was arrested on Friday in Dehradun, police said, adding that the crime was orchestrated over a property dispute.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Pramendra Singh Dobhal in a press briefing said that the accused, Amit Bhateja (38), who was carrying a reward of Rs.50,000, was arrested outside the district court in Dehradun after remaining on the run for several months.
"With his arrest, we have solved the conspiracy behind the murder of Ajay Bhateja, who was found dead at his residence in Jakhan on May 26, 2025", he said.
Dobhal said Amit Bhateja had allegedly hired a contract killer to eliminate his stepbrother following a dispute over ancestral and jointly acquired properties located in Dehradun and Mussoorie. Dobhal said the murder came to light on May 26, 2025, when Jatin Kumar, a resident of GMS Road, filed a complaint stating that his cousin, Ajay Bhateja, had been murdered by an unidentified person at his residence in Krishna Vihar, Jakhan.
Dobhal said the breakthrough came on May 19 this year when police arrested Rajan alias Jacky (36), a resident of Saharanpur district in Uttar Pradesh and a repeat offender. "During interrogation, Rajan confessed that he had killed Ajay Bhateja on the instructions of Amit Bhateja and with the assistance of his girlfriend, Humera (22)", he said.
Dobhal said Rajan revealed that Ajay Bhateja was smothered with a pillow inside his residence. Subsequently, police arrested Humera alias Zoya from Saharanpur on May 23.
