Nainital orders fire audit of pvt schools
Haldwani, June 25 -- The Nainital district administration on Wednesday ordered a sweeping fire audit of all private schools and coaching institutes in the district after two separate fires were reported in Haldwani within four hours of each other on Tuesday night, officials said.
City magistrate AP Bajpai said the first incident was reported at KVM School in Hira Nagar at around 7pm.
The school is owned by Manjul Bhandari, whose lives on the campus.
"A passerby noticed smoke rising from the premises and alerted the owner. By the time fire tenders reached the spot , a large generator and two school buses parked on the campus had been engulfed in flames. Another bus was shifted to safety before the fire spread further," Bajpai said.
A probe was underway to determine the fire's cause, said officials, adding that fire tenders arrived at the spot in half an hour the blaze was brought under control in an hour and a half.
A second blaze was reported to have erupted at a shoe store in Sadar Bazaar, owned by Samajwadi Party state in-charge Abdul Mateen Siddiqui.
"Following information from local residents, police and fire department teams rushed to the spot and initiated firefighting operations. Nearby shops were evacuated as a precautionary measure," Bajpai said.
Officials said the shop was being managed by Siddiqui's son, Umer Siddiqui, who had closed the establishment and left for home earlier in the evening. Preliminary investigation indicates that the blaze may have been triggered by a short circuit.
No casualties were reported in either incident, said officials.
District magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal said student safety remained the administration's top priority amid increasing incidents of fires. "The audit will assess fire safety measures, structural stability, disaster preparedness, health and security arrangements in educational institutions," Rayal said.
He said the inspections would be carried out by joint committees comprising officials from the administration, revenue department, fire services, Jal Sansthan and the Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). The audit will cover structural safety, electrical wiring, DG sets, inverters, gas storage facilities and other potential fire hazards.
