Man shoots neighbour, dies by suicide in Lakhimpur Kheri
LUCKNOW/LAKHIMPUR KHERI, Sept. 19 -- A 38-year-old man allegedly shot his 33-year-old neighbour outside the latter's house in Lakhimpur Kheri on Friday morning, before allegedly dying by suicide at the spot. Police said the incident was linked to a dispute involving the victim's sister.
The injured man, Akhilesh, was shot in the abdomen and referred to Lucknow in critical condition after initial treatment at the district hospital.
Superintendent of police Khyati Garg said, "There was a dispute between the two sides over the elopement of a 20-year-old woman. One person died while another was injured. The woman is the sister of the injured man. Evidence has been collected from the spot, and the reasons behind the incident are being investigated."
The accused was identified as Idrish, a resident of Dulhi village under Padhuva police limits.
The incident took place around 7 am in Dulhi village under Padhua police station, around 47 km from the district headquarters. Idrish and Akhilesh lived opposite each other.
The sequence of events leading to the shooting began on the intervening night of September 15 and 16, when Akhilesh approached the police and reported that his sister had allegedly eloped with Idrish, Padhua police station in-charge Mohit Pundir said. Police subsequently registered an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched a search for the woman and Idrish.
According to Pundir, Akhilesh later informed police that Idrish had left the woman in the village on Thursday night and disappeared. The woman was subsequently called to the police station for legal proceedings, while police continued searching for Idrish in the village and adjoining areas.
"We were searching for the accused in the village and adjoining areas when we received information about the incident on Friday morning," Pundir said.
On Friday morning, Akhilesh was sitting outside his house when Idrish allegedly came out and an argument broke out between the two. Idrish then allegedly went inside his house, returned with a country-made pistol and fired at Akhilesh, hitting him in the abdomen.
Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing the gunshot. According to witnesses, Idrish remained at the scene as people confronted him. He then allegedly put the firearm against his temple and fired, dying on the spot.
Nighasan deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Shivam Kumar said Idrish's body was sent for post-mortem examination, while Akhilesh was rushed to the district hospital and later referred to Lucknow for further treatment....
