6 arrested as heroin smuggling racket busted in Kumaon
Rudrapur, Oct. 6 -- An alleged heroin smuggling racket operating in the Kumaon region was dismantled with the arrest of six people, including a 54-year-old woman, on Monday, police in Udham Singh Nagar district said on Monday.
Investigators said the alleged network was operating in Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh districts.
The accused were identified as 34-year-old Akshay Singh, 28-year-old Piyush Singh and 54-year-old Yashoda Tamta, all from Almora, 32-year-old Saurabh Lal from Nainital district and 29-year-old Bhupendra Singh Mehta and 31-year-old Ravi Thapa, both from Pithoragarh.
US Nagar SSP Ajay Ganpati said the probe was spurred after police intercepted a car at Pulbhatta on September 30 and recovered prohibited drugs from the driver.
"The accused was identified as 25-year-old Saddam Hussain, from Baheri in Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. He has several cases related to drug smuggling registered against him," Ganpati said.
During the investigation, police examined Hussain's mobile phone and found several calls and chats allegedly related to the supply of drugs in Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh, he said, adding that this spurred the arrests.
The SSP said all those in custody have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and produced before a court, which sent them to judicial custody....
