Why Wimbledon loves strawberries and cream
India, July 5 -- A Victorian summer favourite
Long before lawn tennis became the main attraction, the All England Croquet Club, that was later renamed the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, was already serving strawberries and cream to visitors. According to popular legend, King George V helped popularise the tradition of serving strawberries and cream to spectators.
During the Victorian era, strawberries were considered a seasonal luxury, available only for a few weeks in June and July. The fruit was a staple at garden parties, county cricket matches and summer fetes, where it was traditionally paired with fresh cream.
When Wimbledon was first held in 1877, its late June and early July schedule perfectly coincided with strawberry season, making the dessert a natural fit for the tournament. The pairing itself dates back even further. Seventeenth-century English banquet menus featured strawberries served with cream or soaked in rose water, white wine and sugar....
