When Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia's cinematic journey came alive on stage
India, July 7 -- Last Wednesday, Delhi witnessed Bansuri Jab Gaane Lage, a musical production paying tribute to the legendary flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia at Kamani Auditorium on his 88th birthday.
The performance unveiled with the metaphysical lens of Krishna's bansi (flute) expressing concerns about being forgotten. In response, Krishna says, "Jab tak rahenge, honthon se lagaye jaayenge (As long as you exist, you shall be held close to the lips)."
Co-directed by Bhushan Korgaonkar and Kunal Vijaykar, the plot shifts between reality and folklore with scenes from Pt Chaurasia's childhood.
"It was a challenge to portray Pandit ji's whole life in a theatrical form. But we have a lovely musical team and actors who worked hard to put it all together," Korgaonkar told us.
The production also included the maestro's time in Mumbai, captured by evergreen melodies such as Yeh Hai Bombay Meri Jaan (C.I.D., 1956), and his partnership with music director Madan Mohan, which led to the creation of some of the most historic compositions in Hindi cinema.
For both the cast on stage and the audience in the theatre, the biggest blessing was the attendance of the flautist himself. Amitabh Kant, former CEO of NITI Aayog, who watched the musical, said, "The play brings out the uniqueness of one of India's greatest legends. The music is so built in the show that it takes you to another level. It reveals many facets of Pandit ji. It is a must-watch for every Indian."...
