India, Sept. 12 -- F rom checking the glass of water served to the President of India to coordinating their calls with the Prime Minister, former presidential Aide-de-Camp Major Rishabh Singh Sambyal has revealed what it takes to stay constantly alert around the country's highest constitutional office. Sambyal, who served as President Droupadi Murmu's ADC before taking premature retirement after 12 years in the Army, spoke about his training, responsibilities and bond with the President in a September 10 interview with Raj Shamani. According to Sambyal, the entire 1km area around the President is sanitised, with no arms, metal or other dangerous material allowed. Explaining how ADCs are trained to stay alert, he said, "During a probation, so you're roughly carrying around 80 to 70kgs on yourself. You're deprived of water, you're deprived of food, and you're deprived of sleep for 30 to 40 days. And then, you are made to take a walk, roughly around a kilometre in a circular route. While you're doing this, in between random places, there are things kept, say for example we keep a helmet behind a tree, and when that finishes, there's a test: what did you observe? That is how we train," he added. On an ADC's day-to-day role, Sambyal said, "Everything. I would say presidential requirements, which can be official or unofficial. So we look after everything. Say, for example, the President wishes to speak to the PM. She will call us, tell us that she wants to speak to the PM. So we will call up their people, I will speak to the PM, he is there.then she speaks." The role also came with personal sacrifices. "I am not married. So, there's a clause for the ADCs that they can't get married. They have to stay away from their family... this is the biggest sacrifice. While I was serving the president, I can't go out like a normal human being and enjoy life," he shared. He also spoke about his bond with President Murmu. "The first time I met the President, it felt like my mother was standing in front of me. Since 2014, I've never lived with my mom. I always used to go back home for a couple of days, live with her and then again bye-bye for the next six or seven months, and then see her after six months."
