Trans Bill passed by Lok Sabha sparks backlash
India, March 26 -- The LGBTQIA+ community has voiced strong opposition after the Lok Sabha passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, on Tuesday.
Among the key changes, the Bill redefines the category of transgender persons, removes the provision of self-perceived gender identity, and introduces a more biological framework. It also proposes involvement of medical boards, whose recommendations would be required for district magistrates (DM) to issue identity certificates.
In simple words, a medical certificate would be required for a trans individual to prove identity, rather than self-identification.
