This Diwali, protect your eyes and celebrate safely
India, Nov. 7 -- Devyansh is a 9-year-old boy who was bursting crackers with his friends when a cracker hit his right eye. He came to our hospital with severe bleeding in the eye, corneal damage, and burns to his eyelashes and surrounding skin. Despite immediate treatment, he is unlikely to regain full vision. Sadly, such preventable injuries occur every year, particularly among children and young adults.
Firecrackers can burn the eyelids and cornea. Flying sparks and fragments may cause bleeding inside the eye, retinal damage, or even rupture the eyeball, resulting in permanent vision loss.
A few precautions can prevent tragedy:
If an eye injury occurs, never rub or press the eye, and do not forcefully wash it to try and remove any embedded particle. If you suspect a severe injury, loosely shield the eye with a clean covering, without pressure, and seek immediate ophthalmic care. Do not delay treatment, even if the injury seems minor.
No firecracker is worth someone's eyesight. Celebrate responsibly - light up lives, not firecrackers!...
