This 23-year-old turned his terrace in Vasant Vihar into a thriving urban forest!
India, June 27 -- What had once been a barren rooftop in Delhi's Vasant Vihar has been transformed into a thriving urban jungle by 23-year-old conservationist Aman Sharma. Spread across 1,500 square feet, his terrace is home to over 500 native plants, serving as a refuge for 200 bird species and 25 butterflies and other pollinator species.
It all started back in 2020, when Sharma spotted a pair of bulbuls nesting near his home. He shares, "The idea took shape during the Covid-19 lockdown. I love being out in Nature, birdwatching, but going out wasn't an option back then. So, I thought, why not establish a place of my own?"
And so, Sharma built a self-sustaining ecosystem by planting flowering and fruit-bearing species. Over time, the growing vegetation attracted insects, which in turn drew birds and pollinators. "I started with a few plants, then as they began growing, so did my dream to convert it into a full urban forest. Now my terrace is a lush ecosystem. Birds and butterflies fly down in the midst of the city hustle and land on my terrace as a safe green space. It's surreal," he smiles....
