Sindoor, maang tikka at PFW: KATSEYE's Lara Raj divides fashion police
India, Oct. 4 -- American singer Lara Raj, part of girl group KATSEYE, made her Paris Fashion Week debut on October 2 at the Loewe show. Her accessories, though, have sparked a divisive debate on social media. She paired her canary-yellow halter mini with a large stone bindi, maang tikka, payal, and a prominent line of sindoor.
While the 20-year-old singer, of Tamil descent, often incorporates bindis into her style, its combination with sindoor raised eyebrows.
"First in my bloodline to see performative sindoor," a user wrote; another stated, "The diaspora identity crisis meets high fashion. Someone on the creative team wanted an 'ethnic edge' for Paris Fashion Week, so they raided the puja thali without knowing the baseline cultural context." One bluntly added, "She has managed to culturally appropriate her own culture."
