Schwimmer slams UK fest headlined by Kanye West; thanks sponsors who pulled out
India, April 8 -- American actor David Schwimmer has publicly thanked sponsors for withdrawing from London's Wireless Festival after rapper Ye (formerly Kanye West) was announced as a headliner, while also criticising the artiste's past antisemitic remarks.
The actor, known for portraying Ross Geller in the sitcom Friends, penned a lengthy note on Instagram, praising several brands for pulling their sponsorship.
"It's great to see companies with moral clarity. Unlike Wireless and Festival Republic, they decided not to platform an artist who became one of the most recognizable hate-mongering bigots in the world - while the other orgs seek only to profit from one (sic)," a part of his note read.
Schwimmer also expressed his disbelief at Ye's previous apology, published as a paid advertisement in The Wall Street Journal. The actor's note continued, "An apology letter is just that: Words on paper... It does not erase years of abuse." He further criticised the artistes who supported Ye during his recent performance at SoFi Stadium in California, questioning their lack of public condemnation for his past remarks.
This isn't the first time Schwimmer, 59, has publicly called out Ye, 48. In February last year, after Ye's antisemitic tweets on X, Schwimmer asked the platform's owner Elon Musk to ban him from the platform, writing, "We can't stop a deranged bigot from spewing hate-filled, ignorant bile... but we CAN stop giving him a megaphone (sic)."
Despite the growing pressure from sponsors and UK government officials, the festival's organisers have defended Ye's inclusion in the lineup, stating that they are offering audiences "forgiveness and hope" while focusing on the music. htc...
