Sambalpur: Where harvest meetsthe wild
India, Oct. 25 -- The vision of an immense expanse of blue in a landlocked landscape is a breathtaking vision. Near Sambalpur, the waters of Hirakud Reservoir stretch towards distant hills, creating a horizon that feels more coastal than inland. This city in Odisha is as rich in cultural identity as it is in natural beauty. Yet this is only one facet of the region. Travel through Sambalpur and the scenery shifts from harvest celebrations and sacred traditions to forest trails, wildlife encounters and quiet stretches of water.
To understand Sambalpur, begin with Nuakhai, the harvest festival celebrated across western Odisha, typically celebrated in September. The name combines nua, meaning new, and khai, referring to food or eating. It marks the arrival of the season's first rice harvest, but its significance extends well beyond the fields.
The new grain is first offered to Maa Samaleswari, the presiding deity of the region, before families partake of it. Younger members seek the blessings of elders, and the greeting Nuakhai Juhar brings families and communities together.
At the Maa Samaleswari Temple, the celebrations reflect a longstanding relationship between faith, agriculture and community.
Food is central to the festivities. Traditional meals feature rice, seasonal preparations and regional delicacies, including pithas.
From the intimacy of the city, the journey to Hirakud opens up the landscape. Created by the Hirakud Dam across the Mahanadi River, the reservoir is one of the defining features of this region. Its immense waters are dotted with islands, while distant hills frame the view.
The scale is striking. Boats appear small against the expanse, and the changing light transforms the water from blue to silver and gold as evening approaches.
Along its shores lies Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary, where open water gives way to forest, grassland and hills. The transition brings the focus from the distant horizon to the life within the landscape. Spread across 347 sq km along the Hirakud Reservoir, Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary offers an experience shaped by its varied terrain and wildlife.
A safari through the sanctuary offers sightings of peacocks, deer and gaur along the trail, while more elusive species, including leopards, inhabit the forest. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, but that uncertainty is part of the experience.
The rustle of foliage, a movement between trees or a bird call from beyond the trail can become as compelling as an animal encounter. The forest rewards patience and observation, making the journey about more than ticking species off a list. htc...
