India, Sept. 25 -- The walk, the stare, the attitude, and the way a garment moves on a body - the model has always been as much a part of the fashion spectacle as the clothes. What happens when a machine replaces all that human drama? At Vogue World: Milano on Tuesday, four humanoid robots walked the Age of Intelligence segment, and the internet was quick to react. "Let's never normalise robots in fashion, please!" read one comment, while another called it a "prime example of how to ruin fashion." Similar experiments have already surfaced in London and South Korea. However, ask India's fashion fraternity whether robots belong on the runway, and the answer gets very human, very quickly. "We explored this concept two years ago at FDCI, but there needs to be a distinction. Unless there's a genuine tech purpose, there is simply no substitute for a real model showcasing couture and craft on the runway. It's a big no-no from me," says Sunil Sethi, chairman, Fashion Design Council of India. Model and show director Alesia Raut agrees: "I'll never be in favour of AI taking over human talent, especially on the runway. Clothing needs a human silhouette to truly show how it fits and moves." Designer Nachiket Barve says the disconnect is even sharper at a showcase built around craft. "The whole idea of a fashion showcase today, especially in a prestigious place like Milan, is to highlight the rarity and the intricacy and the beauty of what human beings can achieve as creative people as well as skilled artisans. And I don't think robots resonate with that space," he says....
