India, Aug. 25 -- T hree men stepped out in a local market wrapped in white bedsheets as shawls, and it was all captured on video. What they didn't realise was that the 'Western Railway' stamp on the bedsheets would make them go viral! The video, posted by @GemsOfRailway on X (see right), has clocked over 266k views and has reignited the issue of theft from the Railways. The post also mentions RTI data compiled from January 2022 to May 2026, collated from across railway divisions, which found that more than 1.27 crore bedroll items had been reported stolen. These included face towels, bedsheets, pillow covers, blankets, and even pillows. As stated, the total of all these missing items amounted to a cumulative loss of over Rs.104.51 crore in railway property. Lakhs of passengers travelling in AC coaches across Indian Railways are handed a bedroll kit along with their ticket for night travel. Though it's a routine part of the journey, clearly, not every item makes its way back to the coach, with some even ending up going viral on social media. The video has sparked criticism online, with many social media users calling it an example of poor civic responsibility. One social media user wrote, "This is a real shame!" while another commented, "Another example of an Indian with ZERO CIVIC SENSE AND ETHICS." A user even suggested introducing a refundable security deposit for the linen kits to address the recurring issue. "Simple solution is that railways should give it only upon a deposit of Rs.1000.
