Radcliffe bats for mandatory therapy for child actors
India, March 11 -- British actor Daniel Radcliffe, best known for the Harry Potter film series, has spoken about the emotional pressures of child stardom, saying therapy should be mandatory for young actors in the industry.
Speaking on Bustle's One Nightstand With Daniel Radcliffe, the 36-year-old said the public often imagines young stars living a glamorous life, but the reality can be very different. "The illusion that child stars are living a perfect dream can be crushing behind the scenes," he said.
Radcliffe stressed that mental health care should be built into the industry after recalling the tragic case of a child actor who later died by suicide. "This is exactly why therapy should be built into the system," he said, adding that it should not be optional but an integral part of the professional environment.
Reflecting on his own experience filming the Harry Potter films in the early 2000s, when mental health conversations were less common, he said he was fortunate to have strong support on set. "I was lucky," he added, crediting the adults around him during the films' production.
He also hinted that the makers of the upcoming Harry Potter TV series may be considering therapy support for child actors on set. "I've had some conversations with people working on the new Potter series, and I think that's something they are thinking about this time around as well, which is great," he said, although, he added "I don't know, I'm not involved."
