Pink upgrade: The city's lifeline makes capacity check
India, Nov. 1 -- Your next Metro ride on the Pink Line (Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar) could begin with a glance at the platform screen. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has introduced coach-wise occupancy displays on the line, letting you identify less crowded coaches before an arriving train pulls in.
Already available on the Magenta Line since 2022, the feature shows the approximate passenger load in each of the train's six coaches.
"Everyone usually clusters around the middle coaches like clockwork," says Ananya Roy, a Delhi University student who is a frequent traveller between Netaji Subhash Place and South Extension. She adds that for regular commuters, knowing where to board could help break a familiar platform habit. Roy explains, "It is going to save so much of my frantic energy spent navigating the morning office rush."
Simran Kaur, a social-media executive who travels between Rajouri Garden and Anand Vihar, is looking forward to the extra information on longer journeys: "When you're riding almost the entire stretch, standing the whole way is exhausting. Having the load percentage on screen will give immediate clarity."
The new tech addition is also offering relief to those who are required to transition from road to rail due to restrictions on vehicles as part of Delhi's winter action plan, starting today. "I have always driven to work, but since I commute from Noida and my car is a non-BS-VI vehicle, I'm now forced to use the Metro that I earlier avoided due to the waiting time and unavailability of seats," says Rohan Sharma, a marketing professional who travels from Mayur Vihar Phase I to Lajpat Nagar. "At least now I will know which coach to sit in or skip a train altogether if it's running in full capacity," he adds....
