Oscars vs AI: Indian film INDUSTRY REACTS TO NEW GUIDELINES
India, May 4 -- Box 1- Veteran actor Anupam Kher who featured in the 2012 film Silver Linings Playbook, that received eight Academy Award nominations says, "This is the most amazing decisions by the Oscars, because cinema is about emotions and emotions are about humanity and human beings. We cannot use AI in emotions because then it's all machine. It's a welcome decision that should be taken in India and all over the world too."Box 2- Legendary Indian poet and lyricist Gulzar won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2009 for the song Jai Ho from the film Slumdog Millionaire. He tells us, "Human emotion is universal and that is what great cinema represents. In the past we have had some wonderful films from India that missed out on an Academy Award but highlighting human beings and the emotions they represent is the right thing to do. I would like to see stories like that of Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra's Mere Pyare Prime Minister and Meghna Gulzar's Chhapaak, represent India at the Academy Awards.Box 3- Popular director, producer and screenwriter Zoya Akhtar tells us she would like to see such rules that protect the industry against the ill effects of AI in India too. She says, "Absolutely. Writing and even song writing and music composition need to be protected."Box 4- Veteran screenwriter, lyricist, poet, and winner of five National Film Awards, Javed Akhtar simply asks a question that makes you ponder in response. "It (the decision) is understandable. In the Olympics humans don't race against racing cars . Do they ?", he says.Box 5- Noted screen and dialogue writer and the name behind films like Madras Cafe (2013) and Piku (2015), Juhi Chaturvedi says, "Writing is the sum total of a life lived, experiences I have had, it's a deep quest that a writer has to want to know things, that pushes you to explore the unknown. That's what it takes to write an original screenplay written by human beings. Words breathe oxygen into an abstract entity. You pour what you have cried and laugh about into your writing, that's the human quality in a piece of cinematic writing. AI is fed in not lived in, so it's an amazing decision by the Academy.Box 6- Popular actor, filmmaker and writer Gajraj Rao says, "Bilkul sahi decision hai. Kahaniyaan algorithm se nahi, insaan ki zindagi se nikalti hain. AI madad kar sakta hai, par mehsoos nahi kar sakta. The battle between machine and man began during the Industrial Revolution. AI is entering today's world on a massive scale. I don't think it can be avoided now, only a balance can be struck. Technology should be used to tell stories better, not to render writers and actors unemployed. The Oscar Academy is a large institution; the policies it creates will have a global impact. I hope our government will follow this path and look after the interests of writers and actors."Box 7- Screenwriter and lyricist Niren Bhatt known for films like Munjya (2024) and Stree 2 (2024) says, "I don't think such a rule is required currently. We will have to wait and see till, as they claim, AGI (Artificial General Intelligence - next step of AI, machines with consciousness) is developed. Currently Ai is just a tool, that too, not very effective. Can do labor work of typing things out for you at best. Any writer worth his salt can tell you that the ideas it generates are all mostly borrowed and useless. You can't develop a Dhurandhar by putting in a prompt."...
