Orkut comeback? You've got a friend request!
India, Oct. 10 -- Remember scraps, testimonials, communities and checking who visited your profile? Orkut, the social networking obsession of the 2000s, could be making a comeback, 12 years after shutting down! Its founder, former Google engineer Orkut Buyukkokten, has launched a campaign inviting users to support a new platform built around friendships rather than likes and algorithms. "The internet should help us find our people. Friendship. Community. A place to belong," he wrote on X on Thursday. In an open letter, he also lamented how social media had become more about attention than connection. The appeal has struck a nostalgic chord, particularly in India, once one of Orkut's biggest markets. Over 2.6 lakh people from 115 countries have already signed up in support. There's no launch date or working platform yet, but for a generation that grew up exchanging scraps and writing testimonials, the possibility of an Orkut reunion is enough to get excited about!
