Norway vs England takes off in the skies
India, July 11 -- Strap:
As World Cup quarter-final tensions build, the rivalry has spread beyond the pitch to the skies. Ahead of Norway's match with England on Sunday, July 12, Norwegian Air Shuttle and British Airways have wagered their own social media branding on the outcome.
Norwegian Air kicked things off on July 8 with an Instagram dare, proposing that whichever country loses, the airline switches its Instagram logo to the winner's for a day. British Airways initially pushed back, warning its rival not to make bets it couldn't win. When Norwegian Air suggested this meant the UK carrier was scared, British Airways clapped back with the pun: "Scared? Nor-way, mate."
The banter continued, with British Airways later invoking football's famous "it's coming home" chant in a separate post, before formally accepting the wager in the comments and warning Norwegian Air not to get too confident.
Norway's own World Cup run raised the stakes as the team reached the quarter-finals for the first time after Erling Haaland's brace against Brazil in the round of 16. England, meanwhile, beat Mexico to advance, though defender Jarell Quansah will sit out Sunday's match after picking up a red card in that game.
Fans everywhere are loving the wager. Comments such as "Help! I'm so invested" to "eagerly waiting" have flooded posts surrounding the bet. Some are even saying how they're more invested in the airlines' socials than in actual football....
