Motion-preserving spine surgery: A new era beyond fusions
India, June 14 -- For decades, spinal fusion has been the cornerstone of surgery for many painful spinal disorders. While fusion remains an excellent operation in appropriately selected patients, modern spine surgery is increasingly moving toward a more important goal: not only relieving pain but also preserving natural spinal movement. This philosophy has given rise to what is known as motion-preserving spine surgery.
The human spine relies on the coordinated movement of multiple segments. While traditional fusion effectively stabilises the spine by eliminating movement at the affected level, it may increase stress on adjacent segments over time. Motion-preserving procedures, such as artificial disc replacement and dynamic stabilisation, aim to maintain natural spinal movement while treating the underlying condition. In carefully selected patients, these techniques can provide excellent pain relief, preserve function, and potentially reduce degeneration in neighbouring spinal segments.
Motion-preserving technologies particularly benefit younger, active individuals who want to return to work, sports, travel, and daily activities without spinal rigidity. Many patients can mobilise quickly and resume normal life sooner, while clinical experience from advanced centres highlights their potential to restore both comfort and mobility.
However, motion preservation is not a replacement for fusion. The key lies in patient selection. Severe instability, infection, fractures, or certain tumours may require conventional fusion surgery. The art of modern spine care lies in choosing the right operation for the right patient.
As neurosurgeons, our mission is no longer limited to removing pain. Motion-preserving spine surgery represents an important step toward that future, a future where treatment is measured not only by survival of the spine, but by the quality of life it allows patients to enjoy....
