India, Sept. 2 -- T he 2027 MET Gala will need a new fashion focus after the exhibition it was set to celebrate, a major retrospective of designer John Galliano, was cancelled following backlash over his past racist and antisemitic remarks. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Galliano said on August 31 that they had "together decided not to proceed" with John Galliano: Horizons, which was due to open in May 2027. Announced only in July, Horizons was to be the first major museum exhibition spanning Galliano's career and would have made him only the third living designer to receive a solo Costume Institute retrospective. But the decision to honour him drew objections from donors, Jewish leaders and New York politicians. The proposed opening date also coincided with Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Galliano said he remained "fully accountable" for the hurt caused to Jewish and Asian communities and did not want the controversy surrounding him to overshadow the museum.
