Madhuri thi isiliye ki? David Dhawan recalls teasing Sanjay Dutt over Kalank
India, May 26 -- At a special fireside chat during the ongoing David Dhawan Film Festival, organised by PVR INOX in Mumbai, filmmaker David Dhawan revealed that his son, actor Varun Dhawan's Kalank (2019) left him "depressed" after its box-office failure. "(Producer) Karan Johar must have sold his last shirt to make that movie!" he said. Varun, who was also present at the event, admitted the film's poor performance had "shook" him badly. The actor's first flop came after his streak of 11 consecutive successes.
However, what had everyone on splits was when David mentioned that how he teased actor Sanjay Dutt for doing that film.
David had the room in stitches as he recalled asking Sanjay Dutt, "Tu kyun kiya yeh picture? Madhuri Dixit thi isiliye?," playfully referencing to the duo's rumoured relationship in the '90s. He added that "Sanju was very upset during that film." Though the actors never confirmed their relationship publicly, their alleged romance began during films like Saajan (1991) and Khalnayak (1993), but abruptly ended following Sanjay's arrest in 1993 in connection with the Mumbai blasts case.
David also recalled receiving a message from actor Amitabh Bachchan, praising Varun's performance in his debut film Student of the Year (2012). The director shared, "I got a message about him, it said, 'Lambi race ka ghoda'. Do you know who sent it? It was Amit ji (Amitabh Bachchan)!".
