Lesle Lewis returns as B'wood singer after 26 years: Today we make sound bites, not songs
India, March 22 -- Composer-singer Lesle Lewis, one half of the iconic duo Colonial Cousins, is lending his voice to a Hindi film song after 26 years with Zorr Ka Dhakka from Kan Singh Sodha's film Zorr. But Lewis is quick to clarify that he never really stepped away from music: "I never stopped. The hunger grew. The credits grew - singer, live performer, composer, lyricist. Music is my universe."
Over the years, he has remained deeply rooted in independent music, the space that helped define his career. From classics such as Krishna, Sa Ni Dha Pa and Indian Rain to pop anthems like Yaaron and Dosti, he continued creating, despite staying away from Bollywood.
Looking at the current Hindi film music landscape, Lewis believes the biggest shift lies in how quickly songs are consumed. He explains, "Speed. Noise. Attention span... Hook lines trend for two hours, two days, maybe two months. Good music never dies."
According to him, the late '90s were about building songs that lasted. "Back then, we built permanence. We were not following trends. We were building identity," he says, recalling how Yaaron introduced singer KK to a national audience.
With Zorr Ka Dhakka now, Lewis insists he wasn't interested in recreating nostalgia. "I do not recreate. I evolve," he says, adding, "The voice I have today is lived in, textured and stronger."...
