India, Sept. 24 -- A fter a police encounter involving an accused in the Kalkaji gang-rape case took place barely 50 metres from the back gate of Lady Shri Ram College, the college suspended physical classes from Tuesday noon and shifted Wednesday's classes online. The case involves the alleged gang rape of a 17-year-old girl at Aastha Kunj Park, on Monday evening. On Wednesday, LSR students planned a solidarity march along with peers from Gargi College and Miranda House, seeking stronger safety measures around campus. "Many of us are still worried about our safety on campus and so are our parents. The immediate action to move classes online for our safety gave us some reassurance. But such incidents do highlight the need to amplify concerns around women's safety on campus," says Anusha, a first-year student. But students say the response cannot stop at temporary measures. "We can't keep hitting pause on our education every time a horrific crime happens in our vicinity. Honestly, we are tired of safety being treated as a reactive measure," says a final-year student, requesting anonymity. The students' union is now in touch with Delhi Police over specific security measures. Adrija Chakraborty, a second-year student and cultural secretary of the union, says, "We want heightened vigilance at both gates, active PCR vans, and proper street lighting around the back gate and the incident site."...
