Jankee Mehta on donating 90 packets of breast milk and why awareness matters

inger-actor Jankee Mehta recently revealed that she donated nearly 90 packets of breast milk after realising her daughter Rumi, born in August last year, no longer needed her stored supply once she started solids. "I thought, if this milk isn't going to be used by my baby, could it help another baby?" says Mehta, who donated the milk through Mumbai's Surya Hospital.
For the actor, the decision was also about spreading awareness. "So many mothers wrote to me saying they had no idea this was even possible," she shares. Mehta also hopes to ease the pressure around feeding choices, stressing that "breastfeeding your baby is not a moral test of motherhood" and that what matters most is that both mother and baby are supported.
For many women, however, turning to donor milk can be an emotional decision. Sanaya Kapoor, who welcomed twins last year and relied on donor milk after medical issues affected her milk production, shares, "My milk production wasn't enough for one baby, let alone twins. It was a tough decision initially, but donor milk ensured my babies got the nutrition they needed."
Dr Rajashri Tayshete, consultant gynaecologist and laparoscopic surgeon, says donor milk can be lifesaving for premature and medically vulnerable newborns, yet awareness remains low. "We need stronger awareness and support systems to make the process easier for mothers," she says....
