India, June 6 -- An X user recently posted about a commuter's experience with a cab driver sharing how the latter remained glued to his phone while travelling from Noida to Delhi. Does this mean that our screen obsession has now evolved from being a personal habit to a growing threat towards road safety?
With over 700 reposts and 160K views, the X post claimed that the Ola driver had a phone mounted near the dashboard that streamed on full volume the popular TV show Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah. Upon raising the concern, this passenger reportedly met with hostility and was asked to leave the cab. Thus the comment section of the post got flooded with concerns, frustrations and familiar experiences.
The incident has sparked a wider conversation around distracted driving, and the rising culture of doomscrolling that has crawled from our private spaces and reached the driver's seat.
Among regular passengers who are noticing this trend is Aastha Patel, 28, a social media executive who commutes daily between Delhi and Noida, shares, "A few days ago, my driver was scrolling through Instagram while overtaking a truck on the DND Flyway. When I asked him to put it away, he smiled and said, 'Madam, aadat hai, control rehta hai.'"
For the cab, auto drivers, it's rather out of habit that they end up using phones for more than what's necessary. "Barah ghante gaadi chalao toh insaan pagal ho jaata hai, kitna music sun loge? Hum log iss gaadi mein aadhi zindagi guzaarte hain. Yehi humara drawing room hai, aur yehi bedroom. Galat hai, pata hai par akela feel karna bhi bahut bura lagta hai," says Ranjit Singh, a Delhi-based cab driver....
