I wondered if I'd win even one match: Jaismine on illness before CWG gold

eeks before winning gold at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, boxer Jaismine Lamboria was in a Mohali hospital battling a bacterial infection. After a 14-day treatment, the 24-year-old had barely three weeks to recover and prepare for the Games. She admits a medal was far from her mind. She tells us, "My thoughts were very negative at that point. A gold medal wasn't even in my thoughts. I was wondering if I would win even a single match."
Lamboria went on to defeat Northern Ireland's Michaela Walsh 5-0 in the women's 57kg final on August 1 to clinch gold. "When I had recovered, I had three weeks, and it was all about the mindset then. Our psychologist helped me a lot. I could stay positive and perform well," says the Bhiwani-based boxer. The great-granddaughter of two-time Asian Games gold medallist Hawa Singh, she also grew up watching her uncles Sandeep Singh and Parvinder Singh box: "They are my confidence."
Lamboria was also among the Commonwealth Games medallists who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. "He is extremely humble and spoke to us really well. He also motivated us to perform better at other competitions," she adds. For young girls hoping to enter the ring, Lamboria has one message: "Even if you have 1% of hope to fight against all odds, it will definitely help you achieve your dreams. So, keep your hopes alive and march forward."...
