DU know these queens on the board
India, March 8 -- On a board of 64 squares, six young women carried the weight of a university and turned strategy into triumph as Delhi University (DU) clinched first place in the women's category at the North Zone Inter University Chess Championship, organised recently by a Meerut-based university.
For captain Tanishka Kotia, a student of Delhi School of Economics (DSE), the victory carried a deeper sense of pride. "Playing as an individual is different but when we play for our university, it brings immense pride and a very special feeling within. To then go on to win gold is a feeling like no other."
The road to the title began with rigorous individual trials where at least 100 players competed for a place on the team, with only six making the final cut. Players from colleges including Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) and Miranda House quickly found rhythm together. "We all were great friends and playing against each other before DU; to play as a unit was never an issue for us," says Anishka Vikram from LSR.
Surbhi from Miranda House adds, "Although we came from different colleges, chess created an instant bond among us. Our common goal was to bring the North Zone title to DU and make our institution proud."
Behind the medals and applause lies the constant juggle between academics and a game that demands intense focus and hours of practice. The players are quick to credit their professors for making that balance possible. Varshita Jain from SRCC shares, "My professors are supportive to accommodate internals and deadlines specially for me if I miss out due to sports commitments." Surbi adds, "Balancing studies and chess requires disciplined time management and clear priorities. Chess, in fact, improves my concentration and decision-making, which helps in my studies as well."...
