India, July 12 -- On Saturday night, the residence of Ambassador of Belgium to India, Didier Vanderhasselt, turned into a packed football arena. The FIFA World Cup quarter-final screening brought Belgian and Spanish diplomats, expats, and football fans together under one roof. With plates of hot Belgian fries and cold beer going around, and high match-fuelled tension, the crowd was on an emotional roller-coaster. Before the match began, we asked the Ambassador which player he was rooting for, but he kept it diplomatic. "I am in diplomacy, and diplomacy is about teamwork... Football is the exact same thing. It's all about teamwork," he told us. At the half-time break, Ilse Lauwen, the Consul at the Belgian Embassy, captured the jitters, saying, "It's a mix of nervousness and excitement. It completely depends on which direction the ball is moving!" The match was tied at 1-1, but it was a late goal by substitute Mikel Merino that led Spain to the victory, leaving fans at the screening highly emotional and ecstatic....
