Delhi celebrates a literary evening
India, Nov. 7 -- Literature, conversation and engaging stories came together in the Capital for the launch of author Rakhshanda Jalil's The Aunts of Gangapur. The evening brought together Sharmila Tagore, William Dalrymple, Laila Tyabji and Sanjoy Ray as guests of honour to celebrate Jalil's latest book.
Set in a traditional Muslim household, the novel follows Zuby, who escapes Delhi's smog for her husband's ancestral mango orchard in Gangapur, only for her quiet retreat to be disrupted by his eccentric extended family. For Jalil, the novel was an unexpected creative detour. "I've mostly written non-fiction. The idea of the novel came to me last year when I was at a literary festival. While waiting for my cab, I began writing what I thought would be a short story, but soon realised it had the makings of a novel. I saw it as a fun way to talk about issues often brushed under thecarpet amid more politically prominent conversations," she said.
The guests of honour also read excerpts from the book before the evening moved to conversations over Indian chaat, bites and cocktails....
