India, Sept. 16 -- L egendary American costume designer Bob Mackie, whose flamboyant, sequinned creations dressed stars including Cher, Elton John and Diana Ross, died in Palm Springs, California, on Monday. He was 87. His representative said the cause was pneumonia. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Mackie won nine Emmys and earned three Oscar nominations for Lady Sings the Blues (1972), Funny Lady (1975) and Pennies From Heaven (1981). He also dressed American TV legend Carol Burnett throughout the 11-year run of The Carol Burnett Show and had a decades-long association with Mattel, designing collectible Barbie dolls. Among his most famous creations was Burnett's "curtain dress" for a Gone with the Wind parody, now held by the Smithsonian. As a young assistant to designer Jean Louis, Mackie also drew the original sketch for Marilyn Monroe's crystal-covered "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" gown. Mackie later criticised Kim Kardashian for wearing Monroe's historic gown to the 2022 Met Gala, calling the move "a big mistake".
