Bye, bye heat damage: Expert's guide to protecting your locks
India, Aug. 19 -- Sleek and luscious, a good straightened hairstyle can be an accessory on its own. But when done improperly or in a rush, straightening can cause some serious damage to your locks.
In a recent Instagram post, celebrity hairstylist Amit Thakur unpacked the common mistake of straightening damp hair, explaining that it leads to the 'bubble hair' effect.
Amit, who has worked with the likes of businesswoman Nita Ambani and actors Alia Bhatt and Katrina Kaif explained what exactly takes place when heat is applied to wet strands.
"Using a straightener on damp hair is a complete no-go. When you use heat on wet or damp hair, the moisture in the hair strand boils and turns into steam," he said, adding, "Since it has no way to escape, the steam expands into the hair, blasting tiny holes through the hair shaft."
Not only does it lead to thinning, brittleness and dullness, this also affects the integrity of the hair follicle. The stylist noted, "It weakens the hair's protein structure, making it more prone to breakage and harder to repair."
Prolonged use of heat treatments on the hair can be irreversible. However, you can avoid this by taking simple preventive steps to retain your hair's natural strength and resilience over time.
"It is always advisable to dry your hair completely before using any curling irons or straightener," Amit said.
You can still enjoy a sleek and shiny hairdo, without worrying about damage with a little time and care, he shared. More importantly, the stylist added: "Do not forget heat protectant."...
