Bihu beats bring Assam to Delhi
India, April 21 -- T
he Capital recently turned festive with celebrations of Rongali Bihu, or Bohag Bihu, as Delhi's Assamese community came together to mark the New Year with music, dance and tradition. Hosted by the Assam Association Delhi at Satya Sai Auditorium, Lodhi Road, the evening blended cultural nostalgia with a strong sense of community.
The programme opened with a ceremonial lamp lighting, followed by a chorus and a spirited Husori Bihu performance that set the tone for the evening. City-based artistes then took over with a line-up that included Sattriya, Jeng Bihu by Delhi University students, and multi-cultural dance segments, alongside traditional Assamese songs.
"No Bihu celebration is complete without the energy of the dance," said Dipanjali Dutta, President, Assam Association Delhi, adding that nearly 800 attendees, including non-Assamese guests, joined in. "It was heartening to see people from all walks of life come together," Dutta added.
A standout moment was a violin performance by multi-award-winning Sunita Bhuyan, themed Bihu Strings.Beyond Boundaries, which added a contemporary layer to the celebrations. "The instrument may be Western, but the connection is universal," said the Rashtriya Pratibha Samman awardee. "It was wonderful to see audiences across communities celebrating together," added Bhuyan, who has also been recognised by Pope Francis for her work in music therapy with underprivileged children, cancer patients and people with disabilities.
