Bedazzling is back and it's more than just a main character
India, July 4 -- For many, decorating a phone case with tiny rhinestones may seem like another fleeting internet trend. Once associated with the flashy Y2K aesthetic, bedazzling is finding a new audience, with youngsters personalising everything from water bottles and coffee mugs to picture frames and even medical inhalers.
The renewed interest is also reflected in the growing rhinestone market. According to a WiseGuyReports analysis, the global rhinestone market was valued at USD 1.74 billion (approx Rs.16,584 crore) and is projected to reach USD 2.5 billion (approx Rs.23,828 crore).
Psychologists say the repetitive process of bedazzling engages multiple areas of the brain.
Dr Jaya Sukul, clinical psychologist and founder of Headspace Healing, Noida, explains, "Repetitive hand movements can be surprisingly grounding for people dealing with anxiety, gently shifting attention away from racing thoughts and anchoring the mind in the present moment."
Dr Desiree Saimbi, consultant psychiatrist at Sant Parmanand Hospital, notes, "Creative activities engage multiple brain networks. The motor cortex coordinates fine hand movements, while the brain's reward system releases dopamine, giving us a sense of pleasure and accomplishment."
Dr Bhavya K Bairy, consultant psychiatrist at Manipal Hospital, adds, "It reduces stress by encouraging focused attention, improves mood through creative expression, and offers a healthy distraction from negative thoughts."
For Shanawar Khalid, a 26-year-old cardiologist, the workshop offered a welcome change from his usual weekends. "I wanted something apart from cafe hopping," he says. After decorating a canvas and a Coke can, he adds, "It was so fun... it's like an art therapy to me."
Roopsee Karanwal, who works in the corporate sector, says the activity changed the way she viewed handmade art. She shares, "Placing each glitter piece by hand definitely tested my patience, but it also gave me a whole new appreciation for handmade creations." She attended the workshop with her father and says, "We had the best time creating, laughing, and making new memories together."...
