India, June 26 -- Culture aficionados stepping into Akshara Theatre's complex, on Baba Kharak Singh Marg, these days will spot young and old theatre patrons writing 'Ram' and 'Sita' on one of the walls. A closer look reveals that the exercise is aimed at seeking "strength to fight the crisis" triggered by an eviction notice served to the theatre; a copy of which is with HT City. Founded in 1972 by late legendary playwright Gopal Sharman and his wife, late actor Jalabala Vaidya, Akshara Theatre is now run by their daughter, theatre director Anasuya Vaidya. She says the institution received an order from the Land and Development Office (L&DO) of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs on March 11, directing it to vacate the premises by March 16. "We went to the Court and received a stay order till July 20. This was shocking because less than a year ago, we had received an NOC for expansion; we paid about Rs.4.5 crore. In December 2025, the L&DO demanded a further FAR charge of Rs.1.4 crore," she says. According to her, the theatre currently has no pending dues and its lease remains valid for another 50 years. "We seek the protection of Siya Ram," Anasuya adds as uncertainty looms over whether this venue will remain a part of Delhi's cultural landscape beyond next month....
