A love story that is chilling, albeit repetitive
India, Nov. 7 -- Sometimes, love turns sour. But Relics of Love by Kashif Mashaikh turns love into a game of horrors where the line between revenge, angst, and the supernatural begins to blur.
The story, told through multiple narratives, follows Kareem, a secret military agent discharged from service as his mental health deteriorates. He is haunted by the spirit of his estranged wife, Nahid, who died by suicide. With the help of a medium, he sets out to find seven relics of their love to free her soul. As the tasks grow increasingly disturbing, Kareem's history of cheating, emotional abuse, and lies due to his profession make it difficult to see him as an innocent victim.
While his character is explored with depth through his war diaries, Nahid is reduced to a beautiful woman whose world only revolves around Kareem. Who is she beyond a wife waiting for her husband to return? The book never tells us. Ironically, even her best friend gets a dedicated back story.
The most interesting part about Relics of Love is that it doesn't serve you heroes or villains, only morally grey characters. However, it is repetitive after the second relic and offers very little beyond the occasional goosebumps.
