'industry brotherhood makes women feel like outsiders'
India, March 7 -- Actor Mona Singh has had three releases in the past two months: films Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos and Border 2, and web series Kohrra Season 2.
The show saw her portray a sub-inspector in a narrative exploring gendered power structures and internalised patriarchy. These are themes that Mona believes are not far removed from reality, including within the entertainment industry.
"There's a brotherhood romance in the industry, where a woman is often made to feel like the outsider," the 44-year-old opines, adding that these dynamics play out across professions.
"I see that in every field; be it male drivers feeling that ego where the boss is a woman, or at home, where a cook comes and expects the man to decide what is to be cooked, instead of the lady of the house telling them," she adds.
Pointing to how deeply such a mentality runs, the actor feels that women are not deemed important enough to take a call, even regarding their own lives. "In many homes, it's the men who take the call. Women are never asked, only told. That's exactly what we are showing in our show as well. Everything is so real and raw that it hits you."
For Mona, the biggest challenge of essaying a woman in charge in a male-dominated system was the need to perform well. "There is this underestimation of the physical capabilities of women. Being a woman cop, there's a constant need to prove your abilities. I had to prove (the character) in the show."...
