'Diwali allows me to relive my childhood in the most special way'
India, Oct. 21 -- As Navratri gives way to Diwali preparations, actor Sanjana Sanghi is feeling nostalgic about her childhood in Delhi. "I love the memories of the festive season when one after the other there are so many festivals and reasons to dress up and eat good food," says the 30-year-old.
What she particularly remembers is the annual cleaning ritual. "These days I am especially thinking of the run-up to the Diwali day when we all are engaged in the much-talked-about Diwali ki safai," she says, recalling how her mother would stress over the preparations.
Growing up in a multicultural family meant celebrating festivals in different ways. "My Dadi is Punjabi, my Dada is Marwari and my Nana-Nani are Gujarati, so I'm a mixture of all these different traditions of India," she says. Her fondest memories include garba nights with her maternal grandmother and card games with her paternal grandmother.
Now based in Mumbai, Sanghi misses those celebrations. "Whenever I get the chance to go back home for Diwali, I always do because it allows me to relive my childhood in the most special way," she shares. Otherwise, she celebrates with friends, decorating her home with fairy lights and diyas.
As for festive fashion, Sanghi isn't one to blindly follow trends. "We've to stop taking the pressure of subscribing to trends. I've never been able to understand them." If she could raid a celebrity wardrobe, Sanghi says she would pick "Rekha for her timeless elegance and Deepika Padukone for her versatility." "But I'm a lot more comfortable just being myself," she adds....
