Mohali, Aug. 17 -- A 28-year-old woman from Baltana was killed and a man suffered critical injuries after a speeding SUV rammed their motorcycle from behind on the Kalka-Zirakpur highway near the old police post road crossing on Friday morning. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot. The deceased, Pooja Chauhan, was riding pillion with Mohit, 30, on a Hero Splendor bearing registration number HR-03AE-5972 from Baltana towards Zirakpur around 8.30 am. According to Suraj, husband of deceased, she returned to Zirakpur on August 10 after visiting their native village in Uttar Pradesh. Three days later, she travelled towards Zirakpur with Mohit. Near the old police post road crossing, Mohit tried to overtake a vehicle parked on the roadside when the SUV (PB-11DL-3487) coming from Panchkula side hit their motorcycle from behind. The collision threw Pooja and Mohit onto the road and damaged the motorcycle. Passersby rushed both to the Dera Bassi civil hospital where doctors declared Pooja dead. Mohit was referred to GMCH-32, Chandigarh. The deceased is survived by her husband and their two-year-old daughter, Aavira.
