Jalandhar, Sept. 11 -- The Indian Army's Vajra Corps on Thursday commemorated the Battle of Asal Uttar, fought during the 1965 Indo-Pak War, by paying tribute to the soldiers who fought in the battle. A wreath-laying ceremony was organised at the Asal Uttar War Memorial in Tarn Taran, with veterans, serving personnel and local villagers joining the tribute. The battle was fought in the fields around Asal Uttar in the Khem Karan sector, where Indian troops faced a major Pakistani armoured offensive, including Patton tanks. Using the terrain and defensive positions to their advantage, Indian forces halted the advance after three days of intense fighting, inflicting heavy losses on the Pakistani armoured formations. The battlefield subsequently came to be known as "Patton Nagar" because of the large number of Pakistani Patton tanks destroyed, damaged or abandoned during the battle.HTC...
