Two workers die as fire engulfs Surat embroidery factory, 10 hurt
Ahmedabad, March 20 -- Two workers died and around 10 others were injured after an embroidery unit in Surat caught fire early on Thursday, police said.
The incident occurred at a multi-storey complex, near Rachna Circle in Surat's Bharatnagar area where embroidery units operate from small rooms, which also serve as living spaces for workers.
According to the police, a short circuit inside the unit led to the fire, which spread rapidly due to the presence of cooking gas cylinders kept by the workers.
"Two LPG cylinders caught fire and exploded, intensifying the blaze. About 10 other workers are injured and their condition is stable," said Alok Kumar, DCP (Zone 1), Surat.
Police said one of the deceased has been identified as a labourer from West Bengal, while the identity of the second victim is being verified.
Fire and emergency teams reached the spot after receiving a call and brought the blaze under control after a firefighting operation. Several workers, trapped in a tin shed on the third floor, were rescued. htc...
