two Monkeys found dead inschool tank, AAP holds march
Chandigarh, April 19 -- Two monkeys were found dead in a water tank meant for fire safety system at Government Model Senior Secondary School (GMSSS), Sector 28, earlier this week. Though the education department clarified that the tank was not used for potable water supply as it was exclusively designated for the fire safety system, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) staged a candle march in the area to mark its protest on Saturday evening.
Protesters, led by AAP leader Tarsem Mittal, said students had been complaining about the water quality over the past few days. When the tank in question was finally cleaned, dead monkeys were discovered inside, raising questions over the functioning of the school management and the administration, especially given the large number of students studying on the premises, they said.
The party stated that a large number of local residents, parents and party workers participated in the march and raised slogans against the administration. AAP leaders questioned the basic infrastructure and safety mechanisms in the school, stating that there appeared to be a lack of monitoring and maintenance of water tanks. They said that such negligence could pose a threat to students' health.
The department clarified that the incident occurred during weekend. It said the tank has been cleaned. All tanks used for drinking water have been duly secured with iron enclosures, it added.
The school administration said, "The safety, health, and well-being of students and staff remain paramount. The school continues to undertake necessary and proactive steps to mitigate such occurrences in the future."...
